Pair of Elegant Walnut Candlesticks made by Pierre Janzegers (1922 - 2014), a Maryland violin maker and wood craftsman / artist (Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C.)

This elegant pair of walnut candlesticks was made by the expert craftsman Pierre Janzegers (1922 - 2014) of Maryland.  He was known for his craftsmanship as a violin maker and also for his long career at the Mayflower Hotel --- an institution in Washington, D.C..

We were privileged to be able to purchase several excellent pieces directly from Mr. Janzegers and one of his daughters several years ago – in May of 2001 (when they came to us about acquiring some pieces from Mr. Janzegers' personal collection).

This pair of turned wood candle holders is in very good used condition.  There are only a few small marks / rubs from handling over the years. The three small square “protectors” on the bottom of each were put there by Mr. Janzegers to protect table surfaces in his home.

Pierre Janzegers was born in France in 1922. In 1949, after years working in French coal mines, he came to the United States (to Maryland) with his wife and young daughter.  He started working as a busboy at the Mayflower Hotel; in 1984 he retired as head waiter.  He was an institution himself at one of Washington, D.C.'s own legendary landmarks.

Google Pierre Janzegers to find and read the VERY interesting article about him online (by Andy Zieminski, staff writer, January 24, 2008 Maryland Gazette)!  Sadly, more information is now available in his obituary online, since Pierre Augustin Janzegers passed away in September 2014.

Often when you come across beautiful fine crafts, you can only speculate about the person who made them and the history / provenance.  In this case it is very fortunate that the "background" is known.   We were honored to be able to purchase several wonderful pieces directly from Mr. Janzegers.  We hope that the buyer of these beautiful candlesticks will appreciate their history and the dedicated passion and artistry of the exceptional craftsman who created them.

These wonderful examples of 20th century woodworking / woodturning art would be exceptional accent pieces in any decor.

Each candle holder is about 7 3/4" tall.  Each base is 3 7/8" in diameter.
