[PHOTOGRAPHY NOTE: There is interference in the photos from glare and reflections since the original artwork is under glass. We photographed it inside by a window. Even with indirect daylight, the reflections make the colors appear faded, but they are not faded. Also, there are some pink reflections (from our pink camera) on both the glass and on the silver frame.]
This exceptional small original theorem fruit painting features a single pear. It is a traditional theorem painting, a technique of stencilling and painting on velvet. This beautiful original painting on ivory velvet is elegantly framed in a silver gilt wood frame (with a black outer edge).
We purchased this (and a companion piece, a theorem painting of strawberries) years ago from one of Phyllis' friends who lived in the Mount Vernon area (the area of Alexandria / Fairfax County, Virginia near George Washington's Mount Vernon).
It is an exceptional theorem painting with an interesting connection to our country's political history. You can google Phyllis Dole or Robert Dole to get more information. The importance of art and fine crafts in her life was shown by the request after her death in 2008 that donations go to the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. Phyllis was born in New Hampshire in 1925. She had been living in New Hampshire for three years when she passed away in 2008.
[Her maiden name was Holden. She was married to Robert Dole from 1948 until 1972. Her second husband, Lon Buzick, died in 1977. At the time of her death in 2008, she had shared 22 years with her third husband Benjamin Macey (her high school sweetheart).]
When I purchased this years ago for my collection, I selected it because it was an exceptional theorem painting (and I especially like theorem paintings of fruit). After I paid and asked for more information about it, the owner/seller told me that it was by her friend Phyllis, Senator Bob Dole's first wife.
Frame Dimensions: about 5 9/16" x 6 1/2" x under 7/8" (deep)
The painting is under glass in its elegant small frame. The frame is in good condition but it is not perfect. It is in the condition that I purchased it. There are some little rubs / abrasions / scratches and little corner chips. There is a zigzag metal picture hanging hook on the back.
The following is written in pencil on the back, along the bottom edge of the brown paper cover:
