Unique Modern Vintage Turned Wood Vase Urn American signed dated WOODTURNING 1970s

This beautiful turned wood vintage vase is made of horizontal bands of wood about ¾” wide.    The top band --- just below the vase’s “shoulder” ---  includes a row of circles (each circle is ½” in diameter).  The shape, design and proportions include a delicate base and a beautifully flared rim.  It is a modern (i.e. 20th c. / 1970s) interpretation in wood of a traditional and classic shape from the world of china and pottery.

The variety of the types of wood --- both in terms of the “colors” and the grain character (the patterns in the wood) --- contributes to the vase’s beauty.

This woodworking sculptural masterpiece is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom.   It was written in blue / green ink (which has faded and/or partially worn off) on a painted yellow finish.  We have not been able to read the name with certainty.  We have been comparing it to names of some of the American woodturners from the 1970s and 1980s. The date appears to be 1974 or 1976, and U.S.A. is written below the date.

Approximate Measurements:

Height     8 ¼”

Maximum diameter   about 6 ½”

Diameter of base       4 1/8”

Diameter of top flared rim        5 ¼”

Diameter of cylindrical center     under 2 ½”

Depth of cylindrical center            4 ¾”

The cylindrical center opening has a green painted finish.  If you want to use this woodturned “sculpture” as a vase for cut flowers, be sure to use a glass or plastic insert / liner (a vase or slim drinking glass).

This beautiful American work of woodcraft art has been in a family member’s collection for over a dozen years..  It was previously in another collection in the Washington, D.C. area (but the seller provided no information on the vase and its creator).

The vase is in good vintage condition for being forty years old.  Most of the semi-glossy finish on the wood is intact (except on the vase’s “shoulder” and on the top of the rim ---- but it is possible that those areas had less finish from the beginning).  When you closely inspect the surface, you can find rubs / scratches / abrasions / little dings, etc. (from age / handling / wear)--- but they are minimal.  On the wide flat surface of the rim, there is one “ding” that is under 3/8” long.

If you recognize this as the work of a woodturning artist you know --- or if you recognize the signature from our photographs, please contact us.  This is a splendid turned wood masterwork that deserves to be fully identified.

Whether you are looking for one accent piece to be the focal point of your décor ---- or you are looking for an eye-catching addition to your collection of unique American art and crafts, this is a winner!
