Historic Sibley’s General Store Mathews, Virginia signed Original Watercolor GLADYS HAMMOND

This charming original watercolor painting of a scene on Main Street in Mathews, Virginia features the historic Sibley’s General Store --- with the Mathews 5 & 10 store at the right.  A smaller building is at the left behind the blue vehicle (a car? truck?).  Trees are in the background at the left.

The artist signed the watercolor painting on paper in the foreground (to the left of center) --- G Hammond.

Gladys H. Hammond, a Mathews, Virginia resident and artist passed away at the age of 97 in 2011.  Her obituary noted that she was “a member of the Mathews Art Group for many years and loved participating in the Mathews Art Gallery and Mathews Market Days”.

The Mathews County Visitor & Information Center is now located in the historic Sibley’s store in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia.

 Mathews County is located in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, on the eastern tip of the Middle Peninsula. The second smallest county in Virginia, Mathews features more than 200 miles of shoreline! It is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, Mobjack Bay and the Piankatank River. One of the highlights of Mathews County is the New Point Comfort Lighthouse, which marks the entrance to Mobjack Bay.

This original watercolor painting is matted and in a simple metal frame.  The mat and frame are in AS IS condition --- so you might want to reframe the painting.  The surface of the painting is in good condition, since it was protected by glass for many years (until when the glass broke and was removed).  There are a few slight depressions or indentations in the watercolor paper in the sky (near the top of the scene).  They are barely noticeable, but we photographed the painting with bright light so you can see them.  The parallel lines (indentations) in the middle of the left sky area may have been there when the artist painted the scene – or they might have happened later.  The slight indented line above the right side of the store’s roof probably happened when (or after) the glass broke --- since the indentation continues across the edge of the mat.

If you like original paintings that feature small town scenes – and especially general stores and dime stores ( 5 & 10 stores ) – this will be a splendid addition to your collection.  If you collect Virginia scenes – and particularly Chesapeake Bay area scenes – this wonderful painting by the late Gladys Hammond provides a quintessential view of a small community’s Main Street.

The frame is 14 1/8” x 11 ¼” x ¾”.  The mat window is 9 ½” x 7 ½”.  If you are going to hang it AS IS (without rematting/reframing it with new glass), it is ready to hang with a wire on the back

The painting is not dated, but we would guess that it was done in the 1970s or 1980s.
