Antique Print CCNY CUNY The College of the City of New York corner of Lexington Avenue & 23rd St 1868 Hand Colored Wood Engraving framed
The City College of New York ( CCNY CUNY ) was originally founded in 1847 as the Free Academy of the City of New York. It was established to provide children of immigrants and the poor access to free higher education based on academic merit alone. It opened in 1849. In 1866 the Free Academy was renamed The College of the City of New York.
This wood engraving was published two years later — in the 1868 Shannon’s Manual. Joseph Shannon was the author of the Manual of the City of the Corporation of New York. Its eight volumes (912 pages) include a frontispiece, two fold out maps and 24 lithographed diagrams and views.
This is one of the 24 illustrations throughout the eight volumes. It is described as both a wood engraving and a lithograph. We presume that is because the printers/ publishers used the lithographic process to reproduce the original wood engraving.
The “Manuals of the Corporation” were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York. This hand colored illustration from the 1868 Manual shows City College, the founding college of what was to become The City University of New York (established in 1968) - now the largest public urban university system (25 institutions) in the United States.
This 1868 antique print is matted and framed. The vintage (early 1900s?) wood frame has a dark gold painted finish. The brown backing paper looks like it might be a more recent replacement.
The frame is approximately 10 1/2” x 8” x 7/8”. The frame window is approx. 8 1/2” x 6”. The mat window is approx. 5” x 4 1/2”.
This original antique print is in very good condition. Around the perimeter (along the inner edge of the mat) there is a uniform slight discoloration from aging (and since matting material generations ago was not acid free). Its frame (old but probably not as old as the print) is in very good condition with minimal marks from age and handling.
Since it is under glass, in the photos there is a lot on interference from reflections and glare.
