Sheep in Landscape Original Painting on Canvas signed Pauline Wilder unframed

This charming landscape features a single sheep standing before a wonderful vista.  It has the look of a plein air study or oil sketch ---- although we have no way of knowing if it was done outdoors.  It is signed along one of the outer edges; part of the signature is smeared --- but it appears to be Pauline Wilder.

The sheep is centered in the brown (dirt ? rock?) foreground / middleground.  The upper half of the scene is a beautiful green landscape with a dramatic sky.  As you can see from the side edges, there is an undercoat of blue paint (either a base color --- or perhaps a different scene over which this sheep landscape was painted).  On the front surface (at the right) of the painting, there are a few small areas of paint loss where you can see the blue showing through.  There are also some “splatters” of brown --- that we have made no attempt to clean.   There is a small dot of pink paint on the sheep’s right ear; perhaps it is a marker tag on the sheep’s ear --- or perhaps it is something that got on the painting.  It does not look like it is something that has been revealed from the loss of paint on the painting’s surface.

This unframed canvas is 10” x 8” x ¾”.

We have not confirmed information about the artist Pauline Wilder.  There is a Pauline Wilder who is a nurse in Maine; there is a Pauline Wilder Alexander who passed away in Texas in 2013 (at the age of 96), and there is a Pauline Wilder who passed away in Richmond in 2011.  There are some additional references to others with that name but without very specific background information.  So, if you know which Pauline Wilder did this wonderful small painting, please let us know!

If you collect original sheep art, landscapes, landscapes that include animals, plein air studies, small oil sketches, etc. …… this will be a great addition to your collection.
