Vintage Small Sailboats Nautical Original Painting DOROTHY THOMAS 1968

This excellent small original painting is signed by the artist, Dorothy Thomas.  She also printed her name and the date  -- 1968 – on the backing board ---- together with the number 11 in a circle (perhaps the painting’s number in an exhibition /catalogue).  We have not yet determined which Dorothy Thomas painted this charming water scene with boats.  The American author Dorothy Thomas (1898-1990) is known to have done drawings, since some are in the New York Public Library Archives, but we have not determined if she also did landscape paintings.

This view across the water includes two sailboats and trees and buildings on the opposite shore.  The color scheme includes vibrant blues / aquas and oranges.  The painting appears to be done on a heavy textured paper or on a textured board (cardboard).  It is in an ornate wood frame – with an antiqued gold gilt finish.  There is a hook on the back for hanging, but you might want to display it on a small tabletop easel or stand.  The painting surface is in very good condition.  The frame has rubs / scratches / wear from age and handling.

The frame is 7 7/8” x just under 7” x over 1” deep.  The frame window is under 4 ½” x 3 ½”.  The window on the back is 5 1/16” x 4 1/8”.

This is one of our favorite small paintings of water and sailboats.  We had thought we would keep it, but we have finally decided to put it up for sale since so many of our customers have asked to see more of the seascapes / coastal scenes / nautical views in our inventory.  Even if you have run out of wall space for your art collection, you can certainly find a spot on a table top, on a mantle or on a bookshelf to display this beautiful small original painting.

PHOTOGRAPHY NOTE: Even though there is no glass over this painting, the overhead lighting reflected on the painting’s surface makes the vivid colors look lighter and washed out.  The final two photos were taken while shading the painting from the overhead fluorescent lighting.
